Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)
Case Study Instruction for Chiropractic Education (CSI)
CSI Awareness Campaign
Sherman’s QEP for the next four years is Case Study Instruction (CSI), which involves introducing students to the process of case management through using case studies in classes. Case studies require active student interaction with materials, which reinforces student learning. Because Sherman students have often scored lower than expected on the case study sections of the National Boards, CSI was a natural candidate for the project.
Case Management is targeted as the focus for our first year CSI. The first year Case Management Learning Community members include Dr. Bill Fehl, Dr. Cindy Gibbon, Dr. Maria Michelin, Dr. Arlene Welch and Dr. Stephanie Johnson. These faculty members are engaged in an intensive instructional design workshop, led by QEP Director Joy Gayler. Using tools from the workshop, the Learning Community will include innovative teaching strategies with case studies.
The CSI Awareness Campaign will be launched at Bagelfest on October 16 with a case study game. Clues will be provided on the website, through emails, over the intranet and in student assemblies. Students can register to form teams to search for clues to solve the case, and the winning team will get a cash prize.
Dr. John Porter has volunteered to play the part of the patient in the campaign, so if you hear the question, “What’s Wrong with John Porter?” remember that it’s a just game. Students will be on his case for three weeks until the prize is awarded on October 31st during the Halloween Festivities.
